Ferric sulfate is commonly used as a coagulant in water treatment processes, including the treatment of mining water. Here’s an overview of how ferric sulfate functions as a clarifying agent in mining water treatment:
Coagulation: Ferric sulfate, when added to water, dissociates into ferric ions (Fe³⁺) and sulfate ions (SO₄²⁻). The ferric ions neutralize the negative charges on colloidal particles and fine suspended solids, allowing them to aggregate into larger particles, or flocs.
Flocculation: The neutralized particles collide and form larger aggregates or flocs, which are easier to separate from the water. This process is often enhanced by adding a flocculant, which helps bind the particles together.
Sedimentation: The larger flocs settle to the bottom of the treatment tank due to gravity, separating the solid contaminants from the water.
Filtration: The settled flocs can then be removed from the water through filtration, resulting in clearer water.
