Gold and Silver Extraction Process

Today, most gold and silver extraction processes use either Carbon in Pulp (CIP) or Carbon in Leach (CIL) methods. In these processes, activated carbon is used to recover gold that has been dissolved with cyanide.

Here's a simplified explanation of the process:

  1. Crushing and Screening: The ore is first crushed and screened.
  2. Grinding: The crushed ore is then passed to ball mills, where water and lime are added.
  3. Thickening: The solids settle in a thickener with the help of a flocculant, which speeds up settlement and improves compaction.
  4. Leaching: The thickened slurry undergoes leaching in a series of tanks, allowing enough time for the cyanide to dissolve the gold and silver.
  5. Carbon Adsorption: The slurry moves through a series of carbon adsorption tanks. Here, carbon granules move in the opposite direction to the slurry flow, capturing most of the gold and silver.
  6. Tailings: The remaining slurry, now barren, is pumped to tailings lagoons.
  7. Elution: The gold and silver-loaded carbon is pumped to the elution circuit, where superheated water washes off the precious metals.
  8. Recovery: The washed solution is then sent to an electrolytic tank to recover the metals.

By the time the carbon reaches the first adsorption tank, it has captured most of the gold and silver. The final barren slurry is pumped away as tailings, and the gold and silver are ultimately recovered through the elution and electrolytic processes.

Polymer Polyelectrolyte Flocculant Description

 

Blufloc Polyacrylamide, is solid powder water-soluble polymer with varying molecular weight and charge density. There anionic, cationic and nonionic types. It is most often used to increase the viscosity of water (creating a thicker solution) or to encourage flocculation of particles present in water and allow rapid settlement of finely suspended solids.
