Product Description

PHPA Polyacrylamide Polymer

For Shale Stabilization, Viscosity Control, Friction Reduction, Fluid Loss & Lubrication

Product Overview

PHPA (Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide) is a multifunctional water-soluble polymer widely used in oilfield drilling fluids.

The BLUFLOC® PHPA Polyacrylamide Series is engineered to deliver integrated performance in shale stabilization, rheology control, friction reduction, fluid loss management, and lubrication within water-based drilling systems.

By combining polymer adsorption, encapsulation, and viscosity modification mechanisms, PHPA enhances overall drilling fluid efficiency and wellbore stability in demanding formations.

1. Shale Stabilization

Reactive shale formations can absorb water, swell, and disintegrate during drilling operations.

PHPA polymer stabilizes shale by:

  • Forming a protective polymer membrane on shale surfaces

  • Reducing hydration and swelling

  • Encapsulating drill cuttings

  • Minimizing dispersion into fine solids

This helps maintain borehole integrity and reduces sloughing risks.

2. Viscosity Control & Rheology Management

High molecular weight PHPA modifies drilling fluid rheology to:

  • Improve cuttings suspension

  • Maintain stable viscosity profiles

  • Enhance hole cleaning efficiency

  • Support consistent circulation performance

It provides balanced thickening without excessive gel strength buildup.

3. Friction Reduction

PHPA adsorbs onto metal and clay surfaces to create a lubricating liquid film.

This reduces:

  • Drill string torque

  • Drag in directional drilling

  • Mechanical wear on tools

  • Risk of differential sticking

Improved friction control contributes to smoother drilling operations.

4. Fluid Loss Control

PHPA enhances mud cake structure by:

  • Reducing permeability of filter cake

  • Limiting filtrate invasion into formations

  • Protecting productive zones

  • Maintaining borehole stability

Effective fluid loss control minimizes formation damage and improves well performance.

5. Lubrication & Operational Efficiency

Through polymer film formation, PHPA improves lubricity in water-based mud systems.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced friction coefficient

  • Lower drilling energy consumption

  • Improved rate of penetration

  • Reduced risk of underground accidents

Suitable Drilling Fluid Systems

PHPA Polyacrylamide Polymer is compatible with:

  • Freshwater-based drilling mud

  • KCl and salt-inhibited systems

  • Sodium and calcium brine muds

  • Horizontal and directional drilling fluids

  • Water well and geological drilling operations
