Product Description

Product Overview

PHPA (Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide) is a high-performance anionic water-soluble polymer widely used in oil & gas drilling fluids for shale inhibition, fluid loss control, viscosity enhancement, and borehole stabilization.
BLUFLOC® PHPA Series, developed and manufactured by Bluwat Chemicals, is available in powder and emulsion forms, offering excellent compatibility with most drilling fluid systems including freshwater, KCl mud, sodium and calcium brines.

Through multi-point adsorption and polymer membrane formation, PHPA effectively prevents shale swelling, dispersion, and erosion, helping maintain wellbore integrity under demanding drilling conditions.

Key Functions in Drilling Fluids

  • Shale Inhibition
Forms a crisscross polymer membrane on shale surfaces, reducing hydration and swelling while improving borehole stability.

  • Fluid Loss Control
Enhances mud cake quality and reduces filtrate invasion, protecting the formation and minimizing damage to the pay zone.

  • Viscosity & Rheology Modification
Adjusts drilling fluid rheology for improved cuttings suspension and hole cleaning efficiency.

  • Lubrication & Friction Reduction
Adsorbs onto metal and clay surfaces to form a lubricating liquid film, reducing torque, drag, and drilling risks.

  • Cuttings Encapsulation & Dispersion Control
Prevents cuttings dispersion and improves drilling efficiency in complex formations.

Technical Characteristics

  • Polymer Type: Anionic copolymer (PHPA)

  • Molecular Weight: Very High to Ultra-High

  • Degree of Hydrolysis: Medium to High

  • Effective pH Range: 5 – 14

  • Applicable Water Systems: Freshwater, KCl mud, sodium & calcium brines

  • Thermal Stability: Suitable for high-temperature drilling conditions

  • Compatibility: Biopolymers, PAC, CMC, and most standard drilling fluid additives

  • Safety: Non-toxic, non-flammable, non-explosive, hydrolytically stable

Application Benefits

Using BLUFLOC® PHPA in drilling fluids helps operators:

  • Improve wellbore stability in reactive shale formations

  • Reduce drilling fluid loss and formation damage

  • Enhance drilling rate and bit performance

  • Lower torque, drag, and stuck-pipe risks

  • Increase overall drilling efficiency and operational safety

Recommended Dosage & Preparation

  • Typical Solution Concentration: 0.1 – 0.3%

  • Make-up Water Temperature: 10 – 40 °C

  • Mixing Method: Polymer eductor or dry powder feeder recommended

  • Hydration Time: Approx. 60 minutes with continuous agitation (200–500 rpm)

Avoid aluminum, iron, copper, or zinc materials in the make-up system. Prepared solutions remain stable for up to one week under proper conditions.

Packaging & Storage

  • Powder: 25 kg kraft bags with inner PE liner, palletized

  • Emulsion: 1000 kg IBC drums

  • Storage: Cool, dry place, away from heat, flame, and direct sunlight

  • Shelf Life:

    • Powder: 24 months

    • Emulsion: 6 months

Typical BLUFLOC® PHPA Grades
