Product Description
BLUFLOC ANIONIC POLYACRYLAMIDE

Short description

Blufloc APAM is a dry anionic polymer for evaluating water-based drilling-fluid formulations with controlled solids loading. The TDS recommends 0.1–0.5% solution preparation as a general reference. The final polymer concentration in the mud must be determined separately. The featured supply option is a 750 kg net big bag.

Product overview

A low-solids drilling-fluid program aims to develop the required fluid properties while controlling the accumulation of unwanted fine solids. A compatible polymer may contribute to viscosity development or interaction with clay and cuttings, depending on the grade and formulation.

Bluwat APAM screening should focus on the intended solids-management strategy. A polymer that flocculates fine particles may assist a removal step in one system and disturb a deliberately maintained dispersion in another. Grade selection therefore needs the base-fluid recipe, solids-control arrangement and acceptance criteria.

Product benefits

Water-soluble polymer option

Water-soluble powder provides a polymer option for formulations seeking rheology development with limited additional mineral solids.

Grade and solids-balance screening

Grade screening can compare clay interaction and fluid properties against the required solids balance.

Centralized preparation

The big-bag format supports centralized preparation where the site has suitable unloading and metering facilities.

Molecular weight and anionic degree are family ranges, not a single grade specification. Confirm the selected grade and agreed supply criteria before ordering. ISO 9001 refers to the manufacturer’s quality management system, not a guarantee of application performance.

Grade selection for this application

Define the acceptable solids content, clay system, water chemistry and the role expected from the polymer. Confirm whether the process seeks cuttings encapsulation, controlled flocculation or viscosity development, since these objectives require different screening priorities.

Use the general 0.1–0.5% preparation range to develop a workable make-up procedure. It does not mean that every low-solids mud should contain that concentration of APAM. Evaluate the final fluid after dilution, aging and contact with representative drilled solids.

Application evaluation and use

1

Prepare a control fluid at the intended low-solids composition and document the mixing order.

2

Screen suitable APAM grades while tracking viscosity development and visible changes in clay or cuttings behavior.

3

Challenge the fluid with representative drilled-solids loading and check separation through the proposed surface equipment.

4

Set treatment and solids-removal criteria using the combined rheology, filtration and separation results.

Solution preparation and dosing

Use clean, compatible make-up water and add the powder gradually into an established mixing flow. Avoid dumping powder in one location, which can create lumps with dry cores. The TDS gives 0.1–0.5% as general solution-preparation guidance. If specified on an as-supplied powder mass basis, this corresponds to 1–5 kg of powder per 1,000 kg of final solution; agree the concentration basis for the project.

Allow approximately one hour of agitation as a starting reference, then confirm complete hydration. Water quality, temperature, grade and equipment affect the required time. The TDS’s 200–400 rpm reference is equipment dependent and should not be scaled to a different tank solely by rpm. Avoid severe shear after hydration. Determine the final treatment dosage through the application tests described above.

Packaging storage and handling

The featured packaging is a 750 kg net big bag. Confirm unloading, metering and moisture-protection requirements for the receiving site. The TDS also lists 25 kg kraft paper or PE bags and 750 kg net big bags. Store powder dry, protected from direct sunlight and at 0–35°C. Keep opened packaging tightly closed. Consult the current SDS for handling, spill control and personal protection.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0.1–0.5% mean the required final mud concentration

No. It is the TDS's general solution-preparation reference. The final treatment concentration depends on grade, fluid composition and the measured performance target.

Will APAM always reduce the solids content of a mud

No. Solids removal requires a suitable process and equipment. Polymer interaction with particles can help or hinder that process, depending on the formulation.

Can it replace all bentonite in a low-solids fluid

That cannot be assumed. Determine the roles of viscosity, suspension, filtration and wall support in the complete design before changing the clay content.
