Short description

Blufloc APAM is a granular anionic flocculant powder with a particle-size range of 20–100 mesh and at least 89% solids. It is available for thickening trials on oil-sands tailings, with selection based on the feed, overflow clarity and underflow behavior. The featured supply format is a 750 kg net big bag.

Product overview

Oil-sands tailings can combine fine mineral particles, clay, process-water salts and residual hydrocarbons. Thickener performance depends on both floc formation and the ability of the concentrated solids to settle, compact and move through the underflow system. APAM screening must assess these outcomes together.

Bluwat evaluates candidate flocculants using representative tailings and the proposed process conditions. A fast initial settling rate is useful only when the overflow and underflow also meet requirements. Performance in one tailings sample should not be generalized to every oil-sands feed or process-water composition.

Product benefits

Complete thickener assessment

Grade comparison can target a practical balance of settling response, overflow clarity and underflow concentration.

Controlled polymer distribution

Dilute polymer preparation supports distribution through an appropriate thickener dosing and mixing arrangement.

Bulk supply format

Big-bag supply suits sites with regular consumption and suitable powder unloading and make-up systems.

Molecular weight and anionic degree are family ranges, not a single grade specification. Confirm the selected grade and agreed supply criteria before ordering. ISO 9001 refers to the manufacturer’s quality management system, not a guarantee of application performance.

Grade selection for this application

Provide feed solids, fine-particle and clay information, process-water chemistry, residual oil and the thickener operating targets. Include feedwell conditions, underflow pumping limits and the required water-recovery quality.

Evaluate dosage in a stated dry-solids basis where appropriate and test more than the early settling interface. Compare supernatant turbidity, final solids concentration, compaction behavior and underflow handling. Excessive polymer can increase cost or alter the underflow response, so optimize against the entire process.

Application evaluation and use

1

Collect representative tailings and process water, including expected variations in feed solids and chemistry.

2

Compare APAM grades and dosage under a controlled mixing procedure that approximates the feedwell duty.

3

Record settling curves, overflow clarity and final bed or underflow behavior at agreed observation times.

4

Advance the preferred treatment to a plant trial with monitoring of water recovery, underflow handling and polymer consumption.

Solution preparation and dosing

Use clean, compatible make-up water and add the powder gradually into an established mixing flow. Avoid dumping powder in one location, which can create lumps with dry cores. The TDS gives 0.1–0.5% as general solution-preparation guidance. If specified on an as-supplied powder mass basis, this corresponds to 1–5 kg of powder per 1,000 kg of final solution; agree the concentration basis for the project.

Allow approximately one hour of agitation as a starting reference, then confirm complete hydration. Water quality, temperature, grade and equipment affect the required time. The TDS’s 200–400 rpm reference is equipment dependent and should not be scaled to a different tank solely by rpm. Avoid severe shear after hydration. Determine the final treatment dosage through the application tests described above.

Packaging storage and handling

The featured packaging is a 750 kg net big bag. Confirm unloading, metering and moisture-protection requirements for the receiving site. The TDS also lists 25 kg kraft paper or PE bags and 750 kg net big bags. Store powder dry, protected from direct sunlight and at 0–35°C. Keep opened packaging tightly closed. Consult the current SDS for handling, spill control and personal protection.

Our coagulants, flocculants and specialty chemicals support projects in oil and gas, mining, textiles, pulp and paper, and municipal water treatment.

Quality and purchasing clarity

Our ISO 9001 quality management system and agreed grade specifications provide a basis for purchasing discussions. Application performance is verified through the relevant trials.

Frequently asked questions

Is the fastest-settling polymer always the best thickener choice

No. Overflow clarity, compaction and underflow pumpability may be equally important. Compare the complete thickener outcome.

Does APAM remove all residual hydrocarbons

No. It is evaluated here for solids aggregation and thickening. Hydrocarbon-related treatment requirements need separate measurement and process assessment.

Can one test cover all tailings conditions

No. Feed solids, mineralogy and process-water chemistry can vary. Test representative operating conditions before fixing the grade and dosage.
